Valiant Knights. Fair Damsels. Giants. Enchanters. Amadis of Gaul is a landmark story of knight-errantry. Amadis and his friends roam the world seeking adventures and righting wrongs. All the time, he longs to be united with his true love, Princess Oriana.

After its publication in 1508, Amadis inspired a host of successors including Cervantes' parody, Don Quixote. This translation was made by Robert Southey in 1803.

Amadis of Gaul eBook Garci Rodriguez de Montalvo Robert Southey

As the genre of chivalry spread throughout Europe, different countries developed their own contributions to the literature. This is the very long story of Amadis, the greatest knight in the world. There are 4 books in all. The first moves very quickly from adventure to adventure. The last 3 books I found to be more evenly paced, but still filled with many adventures. In these pages Amadis confronts traitorous knights and kings, many many damsels ( some in need of help, others wily and dangerous), evil enchanters, giants and monsters. Here a man is judged by his fighting prowess, and women are judged by their beauty. Life is filled with much peril, with pockets of joy and honor. Some will find this book repetitive, but every event comes off as fun if you like this kind of literature. This is an old translation, and the kindle version has many typos and questionable punctuation. But it really doesn't distract much from the pleasure of reading It.

Amadis of Gaul eBook Garci Rodriguez de Montalvo Robert Southey Reviews

a good read showing how the people entertained themselves before electronics one of the books that was lampooned in Don Quixote
I heard of this book long ago as a piece of Tolkien's literary heritage and it lives up to all claims. Swashbuckling and adventurous and chivalrous and romantic and quietly naughty at the same time, it contains a couple of wonderful enchanters and action every minute. A great balance of adventure to romance to pomp & circumstance, with some consequential mess ups due to good old human nature, poor communication, and bad judgment. Yet all of it written in mellow prose that sings like the King James version of the Bible. All of it is improbable as hell, but that's part of the fun. You can understand why it spawned an entire genre. Thumbs up!
I think that this is a great book - I decided to read it after reading about it in other works, and I have been surprised at how much I like it. Knights riding about on constant quests, fair damsels randomly riding around in forests (so that a knight can barely ride a few feet into the woods without tripping over two or three damsels, either in distress or plotting to get the knight in distress), magicians, giants, etc. It is no wonder Don Quixote's head was turned! I prefer it to Ariosto (perhaps because his poetry doesn't translate well), and even Malory. I recommend it.
